Blockchain

A blockchain is a database that secures against subsequent manipulation through a method that connects all records with each other. It is particularly used in industries where traceability and compliance are important, such as in the shipping of goods or in the financial sector. Ultimately, this technology is an openly accessible ledger of transactions. These are grouped into blocks and linked to other transaction blocks (block), thereby creating a chain (chain). Since the blockchain is stored on many different computers, it does not need to be centrally managed, which also secures it against manipulations. Originally, the technology was developed as a supporting system for the virtual currency 'Bitcoins'.
